A word on the accents, because most listings won't tell you: spinels spent centuries being mistaken for rubies. Some of the most famous "rubies" in royal crowns turned out to be spinels all along. The Black Prince's Ruby in the British crown jewels? A spinel. They were the original red — and the hot pink variety is one of the most coveted colors in the trade.

Paraiba tourmalines are even rarer. Discovered in a single mine in Brazil in the 1980s, they carry trace copper that makes them glow an almost impossible electric blue-green. They're among the most expensive colored gemstones on earth — often priced higher per carat than diamonds.

The salt and pepper diamond at the center holds its own ground. Smoky inclusions, flecks of black, a little universe of its own — the imperfections are the point. Set in solid 18k gray gold, a quieter cousin to white gold, with a slightly stormy undertone that lets the color do its work.
